Oil Company Achieves 99 Percent Sulfur Recovery at Expanded Facility

Oil Company Achieves 99 Percent Sulfur Recovery at Expanded Facility

Project Name
Onshore Gas Development II (OGD II) Expansion
Location
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
Client
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company

The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) is among the world’s leading oil companies. Black & Veatch provided its design leadership to the Onshore Gas Development II (OGD II) project, which involved the addition of a fourth sulfur recovery unit (SRU) to three existing OGD units, plus two new SRUs of higher capacity.

The project uses Amoco’s CBA (Cold Bed Absorption) process, which provides a guaranteed recovery of 99 percent. A three-reactor Claus/CBA system arrangement was used by Black & Veatch to meet the client’s requirements.

Design Innovation

The SRUs are part of the overall facility treating up to 1,000 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) of gas, and between 35,000 to 55,000 barrels of condensate per day.

Black & Veatch designed the new units for 10 percent turndown, and product sulfur is degassed using the SNEA process. The unique steel vessel design for degassing and sulfur storage, instead of a conventional concrete pit approach, is an example of Black & Veatch’s design innovation.

Prior to OGD II, Black & Veatch also completed the existing 3x600 long tons per day (ltpd) units at OGD I, which also utilize CBA and the SNEA degassing processes.
