Overland Park, Kan. (August 28, 2008) -- Black & Veatch, a leading
global engineering, consulting and construction company, announced today it has
achieved an important safety milestone with the completion of the Indralaya
Combined Cycle Addition Project in Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia.
During the course of the project, the company achieved one-million work
hours without incurring any recordable or days-away-from-work injuries.
“Achieving this important milestone represents the collaborative efforts
between our job site management team, Sumitomo Corporation, SSP and the other
multinational contractors working on the project,” said Hal Smith, President of
Black & Veatch’s Construction & Procurement Division. “Black &
Veatch has a strong company culture for promoting safe work practices and
behaviors with a ‘zero-incidents’ goal for all of our projects and work
environments.”
Black & Veatch began construction work for Sumitomo Corporation in
February 2007. During peak construction, Black & Veatch and its
subcontractors managed more than 400 workers and support staff.
Construction activities included mechanical equipment erection, pipe fitting
and welding, electrical and instrumentation and controls commodity
installations, as well as plant start-up. Sumitomo developed the project for PT
PLN (Persero), the Indonesia state-owned power utility.
Combined cycle addition projects harness waste heat, previously discharged
to the environment, to generate steam that drives the steam turbine generator.
This results in increased power generation while burning the same amount of
natural gas feedstock.
The addition project for the Indralaya plant resulted in an approximately 50
percent increase in generation, which is needed to meet Indonesia’s energy
demand. The plant now generates 124 megawatts of electricity, enough to power
more than 31,000 homes.
“All who were involved with this project met each complex task with the
safety of themselves and their co-workers uppermost in their minds,” said Kevin
Bachler, Project Field Manager for Black & Veatch. “The addition to the
Indralaya plant provides the people of Indonesia with an increased electric
supply and enhanced environmental benefits.”
