Energy Security through Military Microgrids

Microgrids are garnering attention in the power industry for meeting energy efficiency mandates, boosting resilience and providing significant cost savings. When implemented at military installations, they also bolster energy security for mission-critical facilities and help meet energy initiative goals.

Meeting Energy Initiative Goals

To achieve Department of Defense (DoD) renewable energy goals, energy managers should recognize the many components of a modern microgrid. Microgrid projects allow for easier integration of distributed energy resources (DERs), such as solar energy, wind power, energy storage and fossil-fueled generation. Smart controls can also include platforms for remote operation, maintenance and data analytics.

Black & Veatch Microgrid Expertise

Black & Veatch is working with Schneider Electric to design and construct an energy security microgrid at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California. This microgrid solution will allow operations at mission-critical facilities to continue if the power grid is compromised, using existing renewable energy resources such as landfill gas, solar photovoltaic and energy storage systems. The new microgrid will also integrate with the utility control system at Naval Base San Diego, which will have redundant controls for additional energy security.

By incorporating lessons learned from our own microgrid at our World Headquarters, Black & Veatch demonstrates how integrated microgrid solutions provide resilient and independent energy that also achieves sustainability goals.
