Kuwait Oil Company awards Black & Veatch Contract for Technology License

Kuwait Oil Company awards Black & Veatch Contract for Technology License for SRU and AGRU to support Jurassic field natural gas processing

Black & Veatch has secured a contract for the licensing technology and related services for sulphur recovery units (SRU) and Acid Gas Removal Units (AGRU) to support natural gas processing on the Jurassic field, a project central to Kuwait Oil Company's (KOC) strategy to increase gas production.

Kuwait has a very aggressive gas production target for 2030. Developing the Jurassic field is key to attain this goal. Black & Veatch’s contribution centres on acid gas removal and sulphur recovery at Jurassic Gas Facility 1, which will produce about half of the Jurassic field's potential.

“We were able to offer Kuwait Oil Company a total natural gas processing solution, delivered by a single source, bringing together multiple technologies.”

Thomas Christensen, Black & Veatch's Managing Director, Oil & Gas, Middle East and North Africa

The total technology solution encompasses two acid gas removal trains designed for feed gas flow; and three parallel identical sulphur recovery trains, with dedicated tail gas treatment units for each sulphur train.

Black & Veatch is involved in every step of the assets’ lifecycle, from front end engineering design to operation and maintenance support. The company is responsible for the basic engineering design package and is bringing together various technologies to meet the performance requirements.

“We are committed to Kuwait’s prosperity. By developing gas resources to meet domestic energy requirements, the country will be able to divert more crude for export. Black & Veatch’s role in the Jurassic project supports this aim by processing gas for domestic use,” added Abdul Gafoor Pulavan, Black & Veatch’s project manager.

Editor’s Notes:

  • The Jurassic gas field is central to Kuwait Oil Company’s 2030 Upstream Strategic Objective, “to optimise the production and utilisation of associated gas and maximize production of non-associated gas in support of the energy requirements for the State of Kuwait.”
  • The Jurassic Gas Facility 1 project is Black & Veatch’s first project for Kuwait Oil Company.
  • Black & Veatch has been delivering critical human infrastructure projects in the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) states for 90 years.
  • Recent Black & Veatch oil & gas and energy projects in the Middle East include the 2x150 ton-per-day sulphur recovery plant project, Sohar Refinery, Oman; 2X660 MW heavy fuel oil thermal power plant in Rabigh, Saudi Arabia; 430 MW and 69mld RO Salalah Independent Water and Power Project in Oman.
