Black & Veatch Helps Deliver First 1,000-Megawatt Class Ultra Supercritical Coal-Fired Power Plant in Southeast Asia

Black & Veatch was selected by China National Machinery Import & Export Corporation (CMC) to provide engineering services and procure major balance-of-plant (BOP) equipment and systems for the Manjung Unit 4 project, located in Ipoh, Malaysia. The BOP scope included the supply of the following equipment and systems: Coal handling system, fly ash handling system, cycle makeup treatment system, wastewater treatment system, induced draft fan, cooling water pump, generator step-up transformer and unit auxiliary transformer.

Black & Veatch procured equipment for major BOP facilities outside the power island, ensuring equipment delivery either at the port of export in China or at the project site. Equipment provided by Black & Veatch suppliers was sourced globally from China and elsewhere, including Spain, Denmark and Malaysia.

Part of the Team

Completed in 2015, the new unit delivers 1,000 megawatts of baseload power to meet growing demand in Malaysia’s industrial and commercial sectors as well as population growth. Output from the Manjung Unit 4 Power Plant is supplied to the national grid.

The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) consortium of Alstom and CMC was awarded the Manjung Unit 4 ultra supercritical coal-fired power plant project in 2011.

“On many occasions Black & Veatch’s teamwork has been beyond our expectations. One example is that during the bidding stage, we expected the Black & Veatch team to work with us as a partner only. Actually, they worked as a part of our team. They are part of us. We think this is one of the main reasons we were successful in winning this project.”

Yuyu Chen, Project Director, Manjung Unit 4 Power Plant, CMC
