Expansion Project Boosts Output at Saudi Aramco's Largest Gas Plant

Project Name
Claus Sulfur Recovery Unit and Gas Treating Facility
Saudi Arabia
Saudi Aramco Oil Company

Black & Veatch was appointed by Saudi Aramco to complete the EPC (engineering, procurement, construction) contract for a debottlenecking project to increase nominal plant throughput at the Saudi Aramco Oil Company plant. The facility’s throughput was expanded from 1,500 million square cubic feet per day (MMscfd) to 2,000 MMscfd, making it Saudi Aramco’s largest gas plant.

The project involved adding gas processing capacity to the existing Shedgum gas complex, which is considered a vital component in the Kingdom’s Master Gas System. The Claus sulfur recovery unit is designed for 95 percent sulfur recovery efficiency with the sulfur degassing unit.

Critical Infrastructure

Black & Veatch provided critical new infrastructure, including inlet slug catcher facilities for additional low- and high-pressure pipeline feeds, as well as a flare system, fully integrated with the existing system. The project also included an acid gas relief header and a sour water stripper unit with existing unit revamp. A high-pressure feed gas heat exchanger train was added to increase capacity of existing diglycol amine (DGA) contactors, along with a DGA regeneration unit with online solvent reclaiming. A triethylene glycol dehydration (TEG) unit was installed with fuel gas stripping to dry the sweet gas before sale. The treating system handles sour gas containing nearly 4 percent carbon dioxide and over 3 percent hydrogen sulfide.

The existing sulfur handling facilities, as well as the fuel and sale gas compressors, were also revamped. In addition to the process units, Black & Veatch was responsible for the cooling tower, electrical substation and other systems to support the project.

Today, Black & Veatch’s local presence is felt in its Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Dubai, UAE, offices, serving as local platforms working with the company’s integrated global project execution teams.
