Safe, Healthy People

We have several initiatives to help our professionals, and the local leaders, and talent we hire to execute major projects, to be safe and healthy, both at work and beyond:

  • Zero Injuries Today - Providing our professionals with the training and awareness to live safer lives at work and at home.
  • Employee Involvement Process (EIP) - Improving behaviors and actions both on-site and in our offices through our ASPiRE principles and core values
  • Wellness Program - Enabling our professionals and their families to improve their mental and physical health and reduce their personal health care costs.
  • Safety of Global Assignments - Ensuring the security and protection of our professionals, wherever they are in the world.

Many of our projects also help make the world safer and healthier, for example:

Our partnership with strategic planning consultancy ReThink Advisors, to improve community livability, prosperity, health and well-being with a data-driven tool for city planning and performance.

Completing the Ukraine’s first Biological Safety laboratory under the United States Defense Threat Reduction Agency’s Biological Threat Reduction Program to combat bioterrorism and potential pandemics.

People in Need

The Black & Veatch Foundation helps build community resilience and responds in times of crisis by coordinating our professionals’ charitable involvement in, and donations to, organizations and programs worldwide.

These include:

  • Engineers Without Borders (EWB)

Black & Veatch professionals work selflessly on EWB projects around the globe. We provide the organization with financial support and are involved with many EWB chapters.

In 2016, the Engineers Without Borders Mumbai chapter helped create a school sanitation site and biogas plant for a rural community in India. The project included the installation of 12 toilets.

  • Red Cross

Black & Veatch contributes to Red Cross initiatives around the globe. We recently supported disaster relief efforts in the United States, Ecuador, Nepal and Myanmar.

  • United Way

United Way supports thousands of community groups and encourages fundraising to increase their reach. The Black & Veatch Foundation and our professionals give time and money every year to support United Way. Black & Veatch has supported United Way for more than 20 years and, during that time, our professionals have raised more than $20 million.

  • WaterAid

UK professionals regularly participate in numerous fundraising events for WaterAid, an organization that works to bring safe water to the world’s poorest communities.

  • Christmas in October (CIO)

For more than 30 years, hundreds of Black & Veatch professionals, retirees, their friends and family members have volunteered for CIO, helping restore dozens of homes and neighborhoods, and changing lives in the process.

Our professionals extended this Kansas City-based program to South Africa in 2015, where 63 volunteers helped local communities with gardening, painting and building children’s playground equipment.

  • Community Resilience Projects

Our projects also often see us helping to build community resilience, examples include design and site supervision work for the Felixstowe Coastal Defence Project, the UK fast-track flood alleviation project in Somerset and a fast-track water treatment plant to help relieve drought conditions in Australia

Dignity for People

The company lives by the value of respect. This Core Value extends to our communities, meaning we treat others with dignity and respect their individual differences.

This dignity can only be achieved by respecting Human Rights, providing decent work for all and furthering gender equality.

Gender balance in STEM

Achieving gender balance is a long-term corporate commitment that we are working on through signing up to WISE’s ’10 Steps’ campaign for gender balance in science, technology, engineering and math.  This is the basis for our action plan for improving female representation in the workplace.
