Georgia Power has marked the groundbreaking of a new natural gas-fired combined cycle generation facility at Plant Bowen in Bartow County, Georgia, a significant investment that will help meet the state's growing energy needs with reliable, dispatchable power generation.

The new facility will have a planned capacity of 1,500 megawatts (MW) and will utilize advanced-class combustion turbine technology via two 1x1 J-Series Air-Cooled (JAC) gas turbine units. The project is being constructed on existing Georgia Power property at Plant Bowen and is expected to strengthen the company's ability to serve customers while supporting continued economic growth across the region. Plant Bowen also includes construction of a 230-kilovolt collector yard to support integration of the facility into the transmission system.

Black & Veatch was selected as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the project in December 2025. Black & Veatch's scope includes engineering and design, procurement of balance-of-plant equipment, construction, startup and commissioning, and performance testing for the facility. Construction will be self-performed by Black & Veatch Construction, Inc. (BVCI), a union-led subsidiary of Black & Veatch Corporation.

Plant Bowen currently employs more than 400 people today and Georgia Power expects approximately 1,000 construction workers to be onsite supporting construction of the new natural gas and BESS facilities.
