The grid hasn’t changed this fast decades. Utility leaders are facing a collision of pressures: unprecedented demand and infrastructure, market speed and policy drag, digital potential and workforce gaps. This year’s report offers a front-line view into the decisions, technologies and strategies defining the future of the U.S. electric grid.
“The electric industry has always been full of changes, but never at the speed it is now,” said Todd Edsall, president of Power Providers for Black & Veatch. “Meeting the demands of AI and data centers requires not just new technology and incremental improvements, but building adaptive, intelligent systems from completely new ways of thinking and tight collaboration across the industry.”
According to the report, 53% of utilities cite limited available power as the top obstacle to getting data centers online, with transmission (47%) and substation upgrades (46%) close behind.
Where will bold leaders take their organizations next? The report offers essential plays for energy leaders navigating this pivotal moment. While the survey shows utilities leaders feeling challenged by rising demands and policy changes, forward thinking organizations are evolving their relationships with data centers, thinking further ahead on integrated transmission planning, prioritizing cybersecurity readiness and investing in climate risk modeling.
In addition, this year’s report identifies where demand is accelerating—like AI-driven data centers—and spotlights growth areas such as grid modernization, clean energy and resilience. It offers benchmarking data from hundreds of industry peers, helping utilities align with trends, reduce risk, and confidently invest in infrastructure, cybersecurity, and innovation to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving energy landscape.
