Turn Innovation into Action

At Black & Veatch, we transform bold ideas into practical solutions—planning, designing and deploying resilient grid infrastructure and advanced digital technologies that unlock the power of data.

Partner with our infrastructure advisors to chart your path to grid digitalization, then collaborate with our transmission, distribution, and IT/OT experts to implement secure, optimized, and customer-focused solutions. Together, we’ll help you realize a modern grid that’s smarter, stronger, and ready for the future.

Fortifying the Grid Edge: Cybersecurity Analysis and Testing for Advanced Distribution Devices, Lessons from a Utility

As utilities modernize their distribution networks with broadband-enabled technologies, cybersecurity stakes have never been higher. This session presents a real-world case study of a utility’s comprehensive cybersecurity evaluation and testing process for ten newly deployed LTE-connected distribution grid devices. These devices, integrated into a next-generation centralized Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) and enabled by LTE wireless network connectivity, offer enhanced data visibility, remote control, and engineering access—but also introduce new cyber risks and benefits.

Speaker session:

Accelerating Fleet Electrification: Utility Programs and Lessons from the Field Cheshta Balwani, Distributed Energy Solutions Leader

  • As California advances toward ambitious decarbonization goals, the electrification of medium- and heavy-duty vehicle fleets is emerging as a cornerstone of the state’s clean transportation strategy. Electric utilities are uniquely positioned to support this transition by offering infrastructure readiness, technical expertise, and strategic guidance. This session will highlight how utilities are enabling large-scale fleet electrification, with a focus on: Utility EV Fleet Programs: SDG&E’s Power Your Drive for Fleets Program, which provides make-ready infrastructure to support EV charging deployment for fleet operators; and will provide real-world examples of fleet electrification projects, showcasing effective collaboration between utilities, fleet operators, and technology providers. The audience will take away lessons from practical takeaways from deploying grid upgrades and EV charging infrastructure, including permitting, construction, load forecasting, and stakeholder coordination.
