The Eastern Municipal Water District's (EMWD) Desalination Program produces drinking water from otherwise unusable brackish groundwater that consists of three desalters, together rated approximately 14 Million Gallons per Day (MGD). EMWD’s Desalination Program ultimately removes up to 80,000 tons of salt from the groundwater basin each year and will generate more than 20,000 acre-feet per year of potable water—enough to supply 34,000 families. In addition to providing a local water supply that reduces demand for imported water, EMWD’s Desalination Program assists with salinity management in the area to allow for the expansion of water recycling and the protection of high-quality groundwater. It also is one of several strategies that reduces EMWD’s reliance on imported water and move toward the goal of drought-proofing the region and providing reliability, sustainability and flexibility to the service area’s water supply.
