Supporting 50 MW of floating wind and BESS

The Mediterranean Sea presents significant offshore wind potential, an estimated 4,700 terawatt-hours per annum by 2050. Black & Veatch supported development of offshore wind in the Mediterranean with pre-feasibility and programme management support for a proposed 50 megawatt (MW) floating offshore wind farm at an island location in the central Mediterranean Sea.

Project: Offshore Wind and Hydrogen

Black & Veatch has undertaken the LCoE modelling vital to informing the viability – and advancing the development – of a 985-MW offshore wind and green hydrogen production project off Ireland’s northwest coast. The initial phase used both floating and fixed wind turbines to power onshore electrolysis of green hydrogen, for onsite conversion into green ammonia.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development selected Black & Veatch to provide independent monitoring of construction on two key programs at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine – the New Safe Confinement structure and the Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility.

Project: Tidal Turbine Optimisation

Digital Twin Central to Lowering Levelised Cost of Energy

Orbital Marine Power appointed Black & Veatch's UK team as Lead Engineering Partner to support technology optimisation and cost reduction engineering as part of the company's 5 million euro research and development programme. The programme builds on Orbital's 02 floating tidal turbine technology, in an initiative to identify and de-risk innovation capable of accelerating cost reductions for tidal stream energy. At the heart of this effort Black & Veatch created a digital twin of Orbital's current turbine design that allows the teams to model turbine improvements and identify which advances deliver the lowest levelized cost of energy across the entire turbine lifecycle.

Project: Ince Park Bio Power Resource Recovery Centre

Energy-from-Waste Project Supports UK Decarbonisation Strategy

As the UK seeks to decarbonise, energy-from-waste centres such as Ince Park help meet the challenges of adapting conventional power generation to the evolving energy market. The EPC contract to create the 21.5MW woodstock biomass energy centre was delivered by a Black & Veatch led joint venture. Providing execution certainty was central to the project’s success. Completion had to be achieved in advance of the Renewable Obligation Certificate compliance deadline. This was accomplished. Black & Veatch provided programme management as well as leading the engineering - including process and mechanical design - and commissioning work for the energy-from-waste plant.

Project: Spalding Open-Cycle Gas Turbine

Global resource brings execution certainty

Intergen’s highly flexible Spalding gas turbine plant provides essential back-up for intermittent renewables. The asset adds resilience to the UK electricity network by providing generation capacity rapidly at times of stress. Black & Veatch’s role in the plant's creation was the provision of detailed engineering design and procurement support for the balance of plant. Spalding was mandated, through the UK government’s Capacity Market Auction process, to be available to generate power at a pre-agreed date. This made on-schedule completion essential. In the event the project was executed on programme and significantly under budget.

Project: 120-MW Energy Storage Programme

Serving as Trusted Owner’s Engineer on UK Battery Programme

Black & Veatch provided Owner's Engineer services for a programme to construct and commission six energy storage facilities. Execution certainty was essential to ensure work was completed within the timescale set by the UK government’s Capacity Market programme. Failure to meet the Capacity Market deadline would affect the profitability of the 120-MW energy storage programme. The ability to draw upon our significant EPC contracting experience meant Black & Veatch was able to advise the client on matters above and beyond the technology application, including the wider design and constructability of the battery storage sites as well as, significantly, commissioning and acceptance.
