PRICO® liquefaction technology with topsides engineering, procurement and commissioning selected for offshore Louisiana facility, advancing global FLNG leadership

Black & Veatch's proprietary PRICO® liquefaction technology has been selected to power Delfin FLNG 1, the first floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility in United States. At 4.4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), Delfin FLNG 1 is expected to be the largest FLNG facility globally, underscoring the growing market for floating solutions to meet the industry’s rising energy demand.

Located off the shores of Louisiana, the Delfin project reflects a new era in how LNG infrastructure is strategically planned and delivered, moving beyond large, site-specific plants and toward flexible, repeatable FLNG units. This approach provides optimized performance and flexibility as global markets seek more adaptable energy solutions.

The selection of Black & Veatch’s PRICO liquefaction technology with topsides engineering, procurement and commissioning for Delfin FLNG 1 further strengthens the company’s leadership position in FLNG. The technology is now in use on seven of the 14 FLNGs operating or under construction worldwide, a distinction no one else can claim. This track record reflects both the scalability of the technology and the company’s ability to execute across diverse operating environments. This momentum continues with the company’s longstanding partner Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (SHI), who will serve as the primary engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the FLNG facility.

PRICO is a single mixed refrigerant liquefaction technology designed with a streamlined configuration to reduce equipment count and footprint, an advantage in space-constrained onshore and offshore environments. Its compact, modular design supports efficient integration into floating facilities, making it well suited for applications where reliability, flexibility and ease of deployment are essential.

Black & Veatch’s LNG expertise spans more than 60 years and includes many of the industry’s defining milestones. The company has been designing and delivering baseload LNG plants since the 1970s, building a foundation of onshore experience that later extended to the first FLNG facility to achieve production in 2016. Today, that legacy continues through a growing portfolio of floating projects that demonstrate the viability and versatility of FLNG as a long-term solution.

  • Tango FLNG provides a clear example of the flexibility enabled by PRICO. Powered by Black & Veatch technology, Tango became the world’s first barge-based floating liquefaction unit in 2016. Since then, it has been deployed across multiple locations, including Argentina in South America and the Republic of Congo in Africa, successfully liquefying natural gas in three different regions. Its ability to be redeployed across continents highlights a defining advantage of FLNG and reinforces the reliability of PRICO in varied operating conditions.

  • Black & Veatch is also advancing Cedar LNG, North America’s first floating LNG export facility, in partnership with SHI. The project applies PRICO technology and a modular design optimized for electrification, using hydroelectric power from shore to significantly reduce emissions. It demonstrates how scalable FLNG solutions can support lower-carbon energy delivery.

The momentum behind FLNG is unmistakable, and Black & Veatch is proud to be at the forefront."

Narsingh Chaudhary, president of the company’s Fuels & Natural Resources segment

"Our PRICO liquefaction technology, combined with our engineering, management and execution expertise, has been proven across more FLNG projects than any other liquefaction process in the world. As global FLNG capacity is expected to more than triple by 2030, the flexibility, scalability and reliability of our platform positions us, and our clients, to lead this next chapter in energy resilience and security."

As demand for natural gas continues to grow, particularly in regions seeking secure and diversified energy supplies, FLNG is emerging as a critical enabler. By unlocking offshore and stranded gas resources, these facilities provide a faster path to market while reducing the need for extensive onshore infrastructure.

With more than 60 years of global LNG experience and a growing portfolio of FLNG projects, Black & Veatch is defining the future of floating energy infrastructure and proud to bring FLNG technology to the United States. Learn more at bv.com.
