Black & Veatch to work on third FLNG facility with Keppel for Golar

Black & Veatch’s patented PRICO® technology, industry expertise and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) capabilities have been called upon again to liquefy natural gas at sea and meet growing global demand for energy. Engaged by Keppel Shipyard Limited (Keppel Shipyard) for a third time in just over twelve months, Black & Veatch will team with the Singaporean company to convert a Golar LNG carrier, the GANDRIA, into a Golar Floating Liquefaction facility (GoFLNG).

“New GoFLNG facilities are set to reduce the cost and time required to monetize and deliver offshore gas to market,” said Hoe Wai Cheong, Executive Vice President and Executive Director of EPC Projects for Black & Veatch.

“One year on and the HILLI is well on track. Together with the third contract, this speaks volumes about the successful dynamic, partnership and commercial understanding in place between Keppel, Golar and Black & Veatch.”

In July 2014, Black & Veatch announced its contract for the conversion of the HILLIFollowing that the companies joined together again in December 2014 to announce a similar effort that would convert the GIMI into a GoFLNG facility. Black & Veatch had also worked with Golar in early 2012 on the concept and front end design for FLNG vessel conversions.

The work scope for Keppel Shipyard and Black & Veatch to convert the GANDRIA is similar to that of the two earlier projects. Black & Veatch will provide its successful PRICO® liquefaction technology as well as perform detailed engineering and process design, specify and procure topside equipment, and provide commissioning support for the GoFLNG GANDRIA topsides and liquefaction process. Keppel Shipyard will provide the design, detailed engineering and procurement of the marine systems and all of the conversion-related construction services.

Mr Michael Chia, Managing Director (Marine & Technology), Keppel O&M, said, “We are extremely pleased to be executing a third GoFLNG conversion contract and thank Golar LNG for entrusting us with this repeat contract and for their continued confidence in our capabilities. Together with Golar and our partner Black & Veatch, we are confident of delivering these projects within the budgeted time and cost.”

Gary Smith, CEO of Golar LNG Limited, said, “We are happy to deepen our collaboration with Black & Veatch whose PRICO® technology has proven its simple and cost effective credentials in 25 plants around the world.  With Black & Veatch, Golar are able to provide an innovative, fast-track and cost effective floating liquefaction solution to our clients who are looking to develop their natural gas assets.”

Similar to the GIMI, full construction activities of the GANDRIA will only commence after receiving a notice to proceed, which is expected in 2016. The Golar GoFLNG GANDRIA is scheduled to be delivered approximately 31 months after receipt of the notice to proceed.

Keppel Shipyard’s agreement with Golar is worth approximately US$684 million. The conversion award of the GANDRIA marks the exercise of the second of two options detailed in the original agreement to convert the HILLI into a floating liquefaction facility.

Editor’s Notes:

  • The GANDRIA is a 126,000 cubic meter Moss LNG carrier.
  • The GANDRIA conversion will be built to relevant marine classification society rules and regulations.
  • Black & Veatch has a record of reliable performance with 25 plants around the world featuring PRICO® technology.
  • PRICO® technology is a proven solution for making the liquefaction of natural gas process easier, faster and cost effective. The technology is applied to a variety of industries including rail, trucking, mining and power.
  • The PRICO® process uses a single-mixed refrigerant loop for natural gas liquefaction. The process provides several key advantages, including:
    • A simplified refrigeration system that requires minimal equipment and a compact process that makes it ideal for offshore liquefaction
    • Low capital and operating expenditure
    • Simplified control and maintenance
