Letter from the CEO: Supporting BV’s Asian Communities

Dear Colleagues,

Last week’s act of violence targeting Asian-run spas in the Atlanta area have many of us back in the same place we found ourselves less than a year ago — angry, sad, fearful and struggling to comprehend another instance of hate and racial discrimination. This heinous act shines a light on the anti-Asian hate crimes that have more than doubled during the coronavirus pandemic and heightens the fears that many Asian Americans were already feeling.

To our friends and colleagues of the Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities, please know that Black & Veatch stands united with you. We are committed to working together to fight racism in all its forms.

These tragedies continue to illustrate that discrimination, violence and fear are a daily fight for marginalized racial and gender groups. What’s taking place outside of Black & Veatch has a direct impact on our professionals’ lives. It takes a toll on their mental and emotional well-being and their ability to bring their whole selves to work every day. So, it’s critically important for us to show up for one another. Support your colleagues. Commit to learning, growing and understanding how they are feeling.

As I’ve said before and will keep on saying: We at Black & Veatch will not tolerate any type of hate, violence or racism. Our commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion compels us to do all we can to foster a safe workplace that welcomes all cultures, races and religions.

We are proud of BV’s large, vibrant and culturally diverse Asian community from various regions around the world. And we know each of these groups continue to face different challenges when it comes to racism, bigotry, xenophobia and socioeconomic disparities. The Diversity & Inclusion Council has launched a community of support for BV’s Asian professionals and allies who need a safe place to talk and share their thoughts, who want to show support, and who are interested in what more BV can do. The DE&I page is also home to more resources on ways you can fight racism and support BV’s Asian and AAPI professionals.
