Carbon capture and storage solutions: end-to-end expertise for industrial decarbonization

A global agribusiness. A U.S. energy infrastructure company. A startup looking to pioneer turning seawater into aviation fuel, leveraging renewable energy. A Big Tech hyperscaler.
Four distinct enterprises, all with an important goal: find lasting solutions for what to do with their carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions while looking to transition to lower-carbon operations.
Each of these enterprises has turned to Black & Veatch, a global critical infrastructure leader with deep expertise in capturing increasing CO2 emissions and storing them deep underground. It’s an established process called carbon capture and storage (CCS), seen as an effective and mature solution toward reducing emissions from fossil fuels combustion operations and allowing for transition to lower-carbon energy sources.

Carbon capture and storage: Scaling up for global impact
Sector transitions from pilot projects to industrial deployment of CCS are happening globally. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that approximately 45 commercial facilities around the world already are applying CCS to industrial processes, fuel transformation and power generation. Reflecting growing interest, more than 700 projects are in various stages of development across the CCS value chain.
Challenges exist in adopting CCS technology. Broader use has been slowed by the technology’s price tag, inflation and tariffs, controversy surrounding how fossil fuels should or should not be phased out, and a murky funding picture. CCS must be widely deployed at scale to become more economical.
Black & Veatch helps clients navigate all of these challenges. For more than three decades, the company has been a market force in integrating commercially available and viable carbon capture solutions across the CO₂ value chain, all the way to sequestration. Black & Veatch experts provide clients with a full suite of services they’ve come to expect and respect — from CCS risk assessment to site screening and characterization, permitting support, geologic evaluations, preliminary well designs, well system designs and project cost estimates.
