Drainage Infrastructure in Qatar Helps Address Needs of Residential Area

Project Name
Abu Hamour Area Drainage Phase 4
Location
Doha, Qatar
Client
Public Works Authority (Ashghal) of Qatar

Black & Veatch has helped address the drainage infrastructure needs in Abu Hamour, a residential area on the edge of Doha City, the capital of Qatar.

The project was initiated by the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) to provide a surface and ground water drainage system in the Abu Hamour area. Ashghal is the governing body responsible for the design, construction, delivery and maintenance of all major projects, including storm and rain water, wastewater, and sewerage drainage and treatment across Qatar.

Black & Veatch performed the role of construction supervisor for the project’s final phase (Phase 4). The surface drainage system comprised reinforced concrete and vitreous clay pipes that ranged from 1200 millimetre to 600 millimetre diameter, together with associated manholes.

The ground water drainage system involved the laying of 25 kilometres of half-perforated pipes and associated manholes. The pipes ranged from 700 millimetres to 300 millimetres and were laid to a varying depth of between four and seven metres. All land drains were provided with a geotextile membrane envelope to prevent silt entry.
