Leading industry publication affirms Black & Veatch as global critical infrastructure leader championing sustainability, lower-carbon solutions
Engineering News-Record’s annual industry rankings affirm company’s status in infrastructure development, innovation
Long at the forefront of designing and building the world’s critical human infrastructure, Black & Veatch has leveraged its discovery and innovation to forge a bolder vision for power, connectivity and water clients around the world. Now once again, a top engineering publication affirms the global employee-owned company’s leadership as megatrends — from sustainability and resilience to cybersecurity, AI computing and a transition to lower-carbon energy — drive demand for integrated solutions from Black & Veatch.
Offering a snapshot of merely part of Black & Veatch’s expansive solutions portfolio, the Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) latest annual “Top 500 Design Firms” list now ranks the company in the No. 13 overall, moving up from the prior year, and No. 4 in power and No. 8 in water, based on the company’s operational revenue in 2024.
“Rankings such as this reinforce our role as an innovative leader that for more than a century has expertly guided our clients through the world’s growing complexities in power, water and so many other markets we serve,” said Patrick Hogan, Black & Veatch’s chief business evolution officer. “From keeping electrons, gigabytes and water flowing to helping clients harden their industrial cyber defenses against unrelenting threats, we remain committed to our mission of building a world of difference with an unmatched breadth of technical expertise across infrastructure domains.” “Our story continues to be one of partnerships, collaboration and innovation, harnessing the ingenuity and dedication of expert Black & Veatch professionals and skilled craftspeople to make this planet a better place,” Hogan continued. “Our clients demand proven, high- performance solutions that deliver integrated sustainability, resilience, affordability and reliability in a world that’s ever-changing, and we’ll always embrace that challenge. When companies, governments and communities have complex infrastructure concerns and aspirations, they turn to Black & Veatch.” Beyond the ENR’s rankings, Black & Veatch’s story — more than a century in the making — rolls on, adding to its legacy of making the complex manageable with first-of-a-kind solutions evolving with the times.
Amid the proliferation of data centers to accommodate this age of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing, Black & Veatch — a century-long fixture in designing and building power and water infrastructure — is uniquely positioned to address the intense resource needs of both for data centers. With a broad portfolio of services capable of advancing data centers from conception to start-up, Black & Veatch offers everything from site sourcing and zoning advocacy to infrastructure delivery, and design and construction oversight.
As the world demands cleaner, more sustainable forms of energy against the backdrop of climate change, Black & Veatch in 2024 became the country’s No. 1 solar design firm, having installed more than 50 gigawatts (GW) of renewable solar projects globally, the largest a 600-megawatt (MW) project in Texas. Black & Veatch also is working on some of the world’s biggest molecular transformation projects to advance the role of hydrogen in the energy transition to cleaner economies. In 2024, the company ranked as the No. 2 both in the design of hydrogen facilities and in the design of battery storage systems.
Black & Veatch remains a global leader in floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) technologies — crucially using the company’s industry-leading PRICO® technology — in helping feed global demand for natural gas as a transition fuel for a lower-carbon future. Half the world’s FLNG projects either in operation or under construction or contract are utilizing Black & Veatch’s PRICO platform, punctuating the patented technology’s significance.
Black & Veatch’s innovative DNA extends well beyond its engineering prowess, from its next-generation food and beverage business sharply focused on breakthrough technologies and sustainability to its BV IgniteX program, which each year works to empower and mentor startups offering scalable critical human infrastructure solutions. The program was launched in 2019, has included more than 45 start-ups selected to participate with more than $3 million invested in non-dilutive funding and in-kind services. The 2025 BV IgniteX Sustainable Infrastructure Accelerator program will open for applicants on May 1 with applications due June 8.
The latest ENR rankings still have Black & Veatch in the top 20 for telecommunications for 2024, despite the company strategically divesting its public carrier wireless telecommunications infrastructure business. The company provides wireline and fiber connectivity, private wireless telecom networks and grid modernization solutions requiring wireless technology, viewing that as a strategic focus area in helping clients make the nation’s power infrastructure more resilient.
Most recently, Black & Veatch was named the exclusive sales agent to market an 800-megahertz (MHz) spectrum portfolio that T-Mobile sold to Grain Management. Grain plans to market those holdings to utilities, other critical infrastructure industry operators, rural and regional operators, and other enterprises, pending regulatory approval.
