Most of the water supply and sanitation facilities in Iraq were suffering from lack of maintenance and the effects of looting or damage in the aftermath of the 2003 war. The consequences were acutely felt in urban centres, where the majority of Iraqis live.

The project formed part of a $65 million World Bank Trust Fund loan aimed at improving economic conditions and increasing the quantity, quality and availability of potable water in Baghdad.

Black & Veatch was appointed to review the physical condition and hydraulic adequacy of several of Baghdad’s water supply facilities and recommend solutions to solve deficiencies and restore the facilities to full working order. Black & Veatch provided study, design and preparation of tender documentation services.

The project comprised rehabilitation, upgrade and extending plants at Al-Karkh, Al-Rasheed, Abu Nuwas and Sharq Dijla, as well as the cross-river link that delivers water to the Rassafa (East side) of the River Tigris.

Through the restoration of a reliable water network and treatment facilities, the project helped address the urgent reconstruction needs of Baghdad and improve health and living conditions in the Iraqi capital.
