Solar power is Estonia’s biggest, and most rapidly growing, form of renewables. At the end of 2022 the country’s installed solar capacity was estimated at 506 megawatts (MW), with solar electricity production growing from 305 gigawatt/hours (GW/h) to 506 GW/h during the course of that year.

Black & Veatch is helping to further increase Estonia’s solar capacity acting initially as technical advisor on a 19 MW solar photovoltaic project serving the country’s capital, Tallinn. Working on behalf of the owner, an international developer, Black & Veatch’s Europe solar team undertook a feasibility study during the project’s early development to support the client in assessing commercial and technical feasibility.

The Europe solar team’s services included:

  • Scoping of site surveys and geotechnical studies

  • Design optimisation

  • Technology review

  • Energy yield assessment

  • Pre-bid support

  • Planning support

  • Grid connection review

Building upon the analysis supplied by Black & Veatch the owner proceeded with an expanded 40 MW scope for the project. With Black & Veatch assuming the role of owner’s engineer.
