Simple Cycle Gas Plant Helps Bring Reliable Energy to Ghana

Black & Veatch was awarded the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to complete a 220 MW simple cycle gas facility in Ghana. Project partners included CMS Generation of Dearborn, Mich., and the Volta River Authority of Ghana.

The Takoradi Power Facility project consisted of two stages. The first stage of work included the construction and commissioning of a 110 MW GE Frame 9E gas turbine generator, including water and fuel oil treatment, which was installed adjacent to the existing Takoradi Power Plant site. The next stage incorporated a second 110 MW GE Frame 9E gas turbine generator.

Black & Veatch provided detailed design, procurement, construction, and startup and commissioning services, and the project was completed 30 days ahead of schedule.

The Takoradi Power Facility is providing electricity to address Ghana’s residential and industrial power needs, offsetting electricity shortages due to periodic drought conditions. It was the first independent power project to be built in the private sector with direct U.S. investment in Ghana.
