Camilla Wood Preserving Site Remedial Action

Project Name
Camilla Wood Preserving Site Remedial Action
Location
Camilla, Mitchell County, Georgia
Client
EPA Region 4

Under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region 4 Remedial Action Contract, Black & Veatch performed environmental consulting services at the Camilla Wood Preserving Site. The Camilla Wood Preserving Site is approximately 40 acres in size, was constructed in 1947 and operated under various names until 1991 when Camilla Wood Preserving Company filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy and wood treating operations ceased. Historically, the site has been used to treat wooden pole products, railroad ties, and other timber with creosote and pentachlorophenol (PCP). Most of the western portion of the site – approximately 25 acres – had been redeveloped into a public recreation area and the remainder of the site was abandoned and located within a fenced area.

Cleanup of the contamination on the abandoned and unused portion of the site was addressed in a Remedial Action. The remedy included excavation of shallow contaminated soil, the construction of a 7-acre lined storm water pond, installation of a vertical subsurface barrier wall, installation and operation of a groundwater treatment system in the intermediate aquifer using in-situ chemical oxidation and the construction of an engineered cap over the 10-acre former process area. Following completion of remedial activities, the site was proposed to be used as a recreation complex, including baseball fields, batting cages, playground, paved walking path and covered picnic pavilion. The recreation facility construction will be conducted by the County in accordance with its master plan.
